People in Dudley are being encouraged to make the most of local pharmacies this Christmas.
Some pharmacies will be open on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day to offer treatments and free advice on common illnesses. Full details of local pharmacy opening times over the Christmas and New Year period are available at www.dudleyccg.nhs.uk/stay-well-this-winter/
Patients can save time in the waiting room by visiting their pharmacist for quick, confidential advice on a range of common illnesses.
Many people don’t realise the wide range of additional services available as pharmacists do much more than dispensing prescriptions. They offer free expert advice on a wide range of health issues, support for self-care and medicines to treat common complaints such as coughs and colds, flu, sore throats, earache, backache, stomach upsets and cuts and grazes.
Pharmacists can also answer questions people might have about any medication and will let people know if they require a doctor.
Dr Steve Mann, GP and Clinical Executive, Dudley Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), said: “With advice on common illnesses and the best medicines to treat them, popping along to your local pharmacist at the first sign of illness can help you feel better faster.
“Pharmacists have trained for five years and can offer expert advice on lots of minor ailments and conditions, and treat minor injuries and infections.
“More importantly, because they offer many of the same services that local GPs do, you don’t need to make an appointment to see them.”
The free NHS 111 helpline is available 24 hours a day, every day. Residents can also find information on their nearest walk-in centres, urgent care centres or minor injuries units by simply typing in their postcode on the NHS Choices website www.nhs.uk
